10 tips to stay safe in the fog
Extreme weather conditions have caused chaos over the last few days. Flight delays from airports around the UK and disruption on the roads have been caused due to the fog that has built up. The fog that the UK is experiencing is called radiation fog. This is when the ground cools overnight leaving the air to cool also. The air is then less capable of holding water vapour, so it condenses into liquid water, creating fog.
The Met office has sent out a “Be aware” warning of fog for England and Wales. We have come up with 10 safety tips you should follow when driving in the foggy conditions.
-
Use low beam and fog lights
-
Use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced - generally when you cannot see for more than 100m
-
Do not use your high beam lights
-
Leave a sufficient amount of space between you and the driver in front
-
Slow down to a safe and manageable if the visibility is low
-
Pull over if you have no visibility
-
Drive at a safely speed. Only drive as fast as conditions allow
-
When turning or braking, use these cautionary lights for a longer time period. You'll always want the people around you to know you are there
-
If visibility is bad roll down your windows and listen out for traffic or any important noises
-
If you cannot see the road. Do not drive. Think before you get in the car
Please stay safe when driving in foggy conditions.
