New online planning tool for Olympics road closures

3rd June 2012

Transport for London’s Olympic Road Freight Management team has launched an online tool to help businesses plan for temporary road changes during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The planning tool includes an interactive map with a postcode/address searchOlympics facility that van operators can use to see how the roads they use will be affected by the Games.  It includes detailed information about the restrictions in place along the Olympic and Paralympic Route Networks and the Road Event routes.

Every day of the Games will be different, so it is essential to plan ahead and allow more time.

  • Check if you are in an affected area.
  • Consider the impacts on your staff, deliveries, customers and visitors.
  • Use the support available to prepare.
  • Complete an action plan.
  • Test your plan before the Games.

You can access the online planning tool, and an action plan template, at www.getaheadofthegames.com.  The TfL website has detailed information about the Olympic and Paralympic Road Networks on Road Event days and the times when road closures will take effect.

“TfL is doing everything it can to make sure people are aware of, and can comply with, the changes that will be made to London's roads during the Games,” Garrett Emmerson, TfL's Chief Operating Officer, Surface Transport, said.

Parking or stopping on the Olympic Road Network will be restricted and when Games lanes are in operation they will be for accredited vehicles only.  A penalty charge of £130 will be issued to owners of vehicles who break these regulations during the Games, and any illegally parked vehicle will be removed.

The Olympic Games run from 27 July to 12 August and the Paralympics from 29 August to 9 September.
