New rules for LGV licence holders
24th May 2012
LGV drivers will need to renew their driving licence every five years, starting from 19 January next year.
- Existing licence holders under the age of 45 will come under the new rules on renewal of their existing licence and will have to sign a medical declaration.
- Existing licence holders over 45 will continue to renew every five years and must provide a medical examination report.
For any lost/stolen or personal detail changes within the existing licence period, a replacement will be issued and will run out at the end of the original period; however if the licence holder changes his or her photo they will come under the new five-year rule.
The changes will be implemented by the Department for Transport in conjunction with the Driving Standards Agency and the DVLA.
“These changes will provide a useful additional reminder for LGV drivers,” the DVLA’s chief executive Simon Tse said. “They will help to ensure that drivers of these vehicles will continue to operate to high levels of levels of safety by ensuring they are fit to drive.”
