Sprinter hailed as Best Panel Van – again

22nd January 2012

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has once again been voted best large panel van by Fleet Van magazine.  This was the fourth year that the Fleet Van awards have been held and the Sprinter has won every time.Sprinter

“We are thrilled to have received such a fantastic accolade for our trusty and reliable Sprinter van,” said Steve Bridge, Van Sales & Marketing Director for Mercedes-Benz UK.

The Fleet Van judges felt that (apart from the VW Crafter which comes off the same line) no other van came close to the Sprinter in terms of build quality, technology, reliability and sheer driving experience.  They also felt the cachet of the three-pointed star meant more than a VW badge, and that Mercedes-Benz offered a better level of aftersales, servicing and repair.

Mercedes-Benz is now fitting the latest generation Bosch Adaptive 9i ESP system to all Sprinters as standard.  Depending on the weight and position of the vehicle's centre of gravity, the ESP sensors enable the load to be calculated at any given time, ensuring that it can stabilise the vehicle when necessary.

But Adaptive ESP 9i brings with it two additional features — Brake Disc Wipe and Electronic Brake Prefill.  In wet weather, the former applies light braking pressure to the brakes at regular intervals to clear water from the discs.  If emergency braking becomes necessary, full braking power is available immediately, reducing the stopping distance compared with wet discs.

If the accelerator pedal is released suddenly, Electronic Brake Prefill automatically and gently applies brake pressure to eliminate in advance the air gap between brake pad and disc.  If emergency braking then occurs, the stopping distance is shorter.

Mercedes-Benz has also been voted as top of the safety category in the What Van? awards, for the second year running.
