Shock findings of fuel efficiency survey
1st November 2011
With rising fuel costs, vehicle operators are looking at any way possible to save money and maximise fuel efficiency. And while the majority of van drivers are conscious of how much fuel they are using day-to-day, new industry research has revealed that more than a quarter do not take it into consideration.
It is not just the drivers who are guilty, however. Van fleet operators admitted to having taken only limited measures to optimise fuel efficiency. Less than half (42%) have considered planning routes for their staff, while only 35% have considered the effects of their van drivers’ driving habits.
Only 18% of van drivers have received any form of training to help them drive more fuel efficiently, only 23% have their routes planned for them and 81% still don’t have satellite navigation to help plan optimum routes. In fact, nearly a quarter (23%) felt their routes were inefficient as far as fuel consumption was concerned, as they often made two trips on the same route in the same day.
Interestingly, of the 60% of drivers who have a company logo on their vehicle, 58% thought this made them drive more carefully than they otherwise might.
