Gareth Edwards - My View on the Rugby World Cup 2011
9th September 2011
Who do you think will win the World Cup?
New Zealand. The Cup is theirs to lose. They are the overwhelming favourites but they will have to cope with the pressure of playing in their own back yard.
New Zealand have been the form team for several years however we’ve all taken note of Australia’s uncanny ability of coming right during the World Cup, and their tri-nations victory is well worth noting.
How will Wales fare?
In all probability Wales is in the most difficult group from which to qualify. However our preparation has been thorough and demanding.
Beating the reigning world champions in our opening match would be an unbelievable achievement and a great confidence booster.
The matches between Wales and Samoa, and Wales and Fiji, are far more difficult to predict. Both will be physically demanding and with Samoa enjoying quite a bit of local support in New Zealand they will prove stubborn opponents. We all know Fiji’s capability from the last world cup.
Which Wales player will shine?
Sam Warburton. We have several players who could use this World Cup as platform to elevate their status but my eyes will be on Sam Warburton, the young Welsh skipper who has the game to become the very best.
Any Others?
George North, who seems to be improving with every game, and Dan Lydiate. However, as I said, it is a stage set for many to show their capabilities.
Star player of the World Cup?
Of course we will be greatly influenced by the more successful teams and one would expect Dan Carter to be the leading personality.
Other players who have caught my eye in recent weeks: Will Genia the Australian scrum half who was outstanding recently against NZ; Sonny Bill Williams (NZ) could show us his undoubted skill that made him such a star in rugby league; Quade Cooper and Curtly Beale are other outstanding Australian backs plus flanker David Pocock.
And, hopefully Shane Williams will once again show us his outstanding skills.
Do you foresee any tournament shocks?
I will be surprised if the top four seeds don’t make the semi-finals. However one does take note from past experiences, New Zealand v France at Cardiff 4 years ago for instance. But that uncertainty is what spices up this tournament.
Many will just hope to get out of the pool games
What do you think of Wales' Number 9’s?
Wales have several up and coming young stars in their ranks who I hope will grasp their opportunity.
Of course I have particular interest in the scrum half berth and there were several surprises in the final selection.
Although they have shown great potential early in the season I did not envisage Tavis Knoyle and Lloyd Williams to be in the final selection. However I wish them both good luck and hope they all have a great tournament.
