Van sales up 17% in May

New LCV sales were 17% higher in May than in May 2010, with 19,966 units registered according to the latest SMMT figures. Demand in the first five months of this year was 27% up at 110,388 units, which means that on a rolling annual basis the market is 24% up at 246,172 units.
- LCVs up to 2 tonnes – up 13% in May at 3,331 units. January-May up 5.5% at 21,294 units.
- LCVs 2-3.5 tonnes – up 18% in May at 16,635 units. January-May up 33% at 89,094 units.
“May’s registrations show sustained confidence in the commercial vehicle market,” said Paul Everitt, the SMMT chief executive. “Heavy trucks, led by artics, again demonstrated the most robust growth in the month. But the increase in van sales illustrates the ongoing resurgence in the market.”
Total commercial vehicle sales were 18% up in May at 23,026 units and are 27% up on a year-to-date basis at 126,162 units.
